We will follow the following steps:
- We return to first species and fourth species in three parts
- We add two parts in mixed values to a CF
- We leave the CF behind and write all three parts in mixed values
- We make imitative openings in three parts
Hard rules
- Only vertical consonances are allowed.
- A fourth may occur between the upper two parts, as long as the lowest voice has a third or fifth below the middle voice
- Augmented fourth and diminished fifth may be used as consonances between the upper two voices as part of a "diminished 6/3 chord"
- At least two out of three voices must begin and end on a perfect consonance, but the third voice may make a third above the lowest note
- In fourth species, the 9-8 (or 2-1) suspension and the 4-5 suspension may be used as long as there is some imperfect consonance at the moment of resolution.
